Misconceptions

Often people, especially new programmers, want to make an MMORPG from the outset of their development career. There is no problem with this. The problem is, however, that such people rarely understand the amount of effort that is required to complete such a task. Here's a short list of common misconceptions.

You need to be 100% dedicated to learning if you want to make an MMORPG
There is no magical "Make My Game" button - there's hard work, dedication and a lot of time. Only a very dedicated and motivated person and learn how to make an MMORPG, and then put that knowledge into action.

Learning to code is not easy
Most people spend many months and even years using Game Maker's Drag n' Drop system. Once they've learned the extent of it, they move to GML code. It takes long enough to learn one or the other, yet alone both. Coding might be a difficult concept to wrap your head around at first, stick with it and you'll see the benefits.
Your first MMORPG attempt will be a failure
Iteration is the key to perfection. Do not have any high hopes of 10 million people flocking to your first game! Every time you re-write something, your game's quality improves. If you re-write your chat system 10 times, adding to it each time, it's going to be a a much better system by the end of it! The same applies for your game as a whole. The more MMORPG's you attempt, the better they'll be.

You do not need a team!
Absolutely everything can and should be done by you at this point. Do not outsource talent to anyone, such as a graphic artist, just yet. Your main focus should be learning how to code, and how systems should interact.
